Research Interests

Environmental Proteomics for Bioremediation Research by nanoLC-MS/MS

With a world contaminated by hazardous materials, the need for environmental remediation is ever present.  Employment of bioremediation is growing in popularity because it is often cost efficient, can be performed in situ, and can result in complete degradation of toxic materials to innocuous compounds.

Our interest lies in bridging the gap between knowing the genetic makeup of microbial populations, and understanding how the community is actually functioning in situ, specifically by:

  • Developing methods for more efficient sample preparation, separation, and detection of bacterial membrane proteins.
  • Exploring the applications of "bottom up" proteomics to quantitative monitoring of microbial activity at contaminated sites.
  • Investigating the correlation between genetic biomarker measurement and protein function.
