Organization: KUN OC MS Hello MSrs, could anyone of you mail a picture of PFK recorded using Ammonia-CI. I'm trying to do so on a old VG7070 where it wasn't performed on yet. I followed the manual but encounter quite a lot of background or ionising differences?? I rinsed the tubing and evaporated it. Tubing is flushed with ammonia. So if anyone can show me a clear/clean picture it would be appreciated very much. best regards Peter mailto:pvang@sci.kun.nl ****************************************************************************** From: cody@jeol.com (Chip Cody) Subject: Re: Spectrum wanted. Date: Fri, 22 Sep 2000 16:42:12 GMT Organization: JEOL USA, Inc. PFK is not readily ionized by ammonia CI. Ammonia CI requires that the analyte have a higher proton affinity than the reagent ions or a polarity high enough to permit ammonium attachment. PFK is neither basic or polar. However, I was recently reminded that a mixture of methane and ammonia can provide excellent results with PFK. The reference is: Pergantis, S. A.; Emond, C. A.; Madilao, L. L.; Eigendorf, G. K., Org. Mass Spectrom. 29 (1994), 439-444. This requires a little plumbing, but it is an excellent solution to the need for an internal reference for ammonia CI. Chip Cody (JEOL) -- "For purposes of ... Organization: Infonie PFK - I assume you mean perfluorokerosine - has a very low proton affinity, so it won't ionise in ammonia. All you see are the impurities. If it did ionise under these conditions, there would no longer be a problem in calibrating the mass axis of TOF machines with API sources.
