Software that is available to School employees

The Institue has lisencing agreements covering several different software packages that may be useful to employees of the School. These include site lisencing for many Microsoft office products and site lisencing for many Microsoft operating system upgrades. Details of what is available and downloads can be found at http://software.oit.gatech.edu.

The institute also has site lisences for e-mail software (Eudora), anti-virus packages (NAI virus scan,NAI virex), secure shell terminal emulation (secureCRT), firewalls (zone alarm) and several other packages including mathematica, maple and oracle.

secureCRT and other secure shell SSH products provide secure alternatives to Telnet and FTP. Both Telnet and FTP use unencrypted passwords. Everytime you use FTP or Telnet it is in principle possible for some malicious person to pick up your password and use it for whatwever purpose they want. Secure shell products should be used in preference to FTP and Telnet wherever possible.

The School of Chemistry and Biochemistry has also participated in the purchase of a lisence agreement for Timbuktu. This product allows you to remotely link to a PC or MacIntosh and work as though you were actually in the room with your computer. Contact CSG (Computer Support group) for information on how to get Timbuktu on your machines.
